Blessed thistle is most commonly used nowadays as a tonic to support healthy breast milk production and volume in lactating mothers.   Blessed, Sacred, or Holy Thistle as a medical agent dates back to the early 1500's and is referred to in early literature as a heal all. Early writers such as Turner, Gerard and Culpepper mention it in treatment for the Plague, but it was more often used as a stimulant tonic able to improve general weakness and debility. It was recommended for poor appetite, to improve circulation and for headache. It is used in the digestive liqueur Benedictine.
